Founded in March 2014, the Sheffield Mavericks are a passionate and fast-growing recreational ice hockey team based at Ice Sheffield. We’re proud to be part of Sheffield’s vibrant and ever-expanding ice hockey community, offering a welcoming home for both seasoned players and those new to the sport.

As a forward for the Sheffield Mavericks, Oli is known for unleashing the hardest slap shot on the team—a weapon that keeps goalies on their toes and fans on their feet. But Oli’s impact goes far beyond his blistering shot. He’s the Mavericks’ emotional engine—a leader, motivator, and mentor rolled into one. Whether he’s rallying the bench, guiding new players, or celebrating a hard-fought win, Oli brings unmatched energy and heart to every game. Off the ice, Oli’s leadership skills are just as impressive. With over 18 years in senior retail roles—including at Tesco, JD Sports, and BMW—he brings a wealth of experience in team building, coaching, and culture. That same drive and vision have helped shape the Mavericks into a team that feels more like a family. From late-night training sessions to trophy celebrations, Oli is always there—first on the ice, last to leave, and always leading by example.

Luke Braithwaite

Every great team needs a steady hand behind the bench—and for the Sheffield Mavericks, that’s Luke Braithwaite.

As co-owner and head coach, Luke is the tactical mind and calm presence that keeps the Mavericks focused, motivated, and always improving. With a deep understanding of the game and a passion for player development, Luke has helped shape the Mavericks into a team that balances competitive spirit with community values.

Luke is known for his thoughtful approach to coaching—patient, encouraging, and always focused on the bigger picture. Whether he’s drawing up plays, mentoring new players, or managing the bench during a tight game, he brings a quiet confidence and a deep respect for the sport.

Off the ice, Luke works closely with co-owner Oli Duckenfield to grow the Mavericks’ presence in Sheffield and beyond. Together, they’ve built a team that’s not just about winning games, but about creating a space where players of all backgrounds can thrive.
